| In January 2008, construction began on the new Panama City/Bay County International Airport, the first airport built in the U.S. Since 9/11, and in fact, the first new commercial service U.S. airport in more than 10 years. The eyes of the world will be on Bay County as this state-of-the-art transportation marvel opens on Memorial Day 2010. With integrated and adjacent industrial sites on 4000 acres of airport property, a 10,000 foot runway, a deep seaport, rail service and an extensive, easily accessible highway system, the region is poised to take advantage of an intermodal opportunity other areas of the country can only dream about. As of October 2008, construction at the airport site is approximately three to four months ahead of schedule. Paving of the runway is underway and the terminal and support buildings package contract has been awarded to Walbridge, a construction firm out of Michigan. Work on the state-of-the-art terminal building is getting set to kick into high gear. The Airport Authority has committed that the new airport terminal will be certifies “green” under the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program of the U.S. Green Building Council. The LEED program is a voluntary certification program that defines high-performance buildings which are more environmentally responsible. A new website, www.newpcairport.com , is up and running and gives the public the opportunity to follow the construction of the new Panama City/Bay County International Airport. The site contains construction reports, progress photos and news releases that are updated weekly. Those wishing to get the latest news about the project can sign up on line to have new content sent to their email as soon as it is posted on the site. When the new airport opens, we expect to usher in a new era of “connectedness” for our community. Elsewhere, new airports have been important drivers of economic development, and we expect that to be the case here in Northwest Florida. Economic development organizations like Florida’s Great Northwest, Enterprise Florida and our own Bay County Economic Development Alliance are working hard to ensure new jobs and improved air service arrive on schedule in 2010. The Panama City/Bay County International Airport has truly been designed to meet our region’s aviation needs for the next 50 to 100 years. |
